Mini Stacked “Books”! I struggle with decorating tiered trays and I love them! So my goal this Christmas season is to up my game and here is my first mini DIY!
Supplies I Used
- Pine Wood- For One set you will need 1″ x 4″ x 15″ cut into 5″ length and sanded.
- Paint of your Choice. I used Dixie Belle’s Cotton, Rustic Red, and Mud Puddle
- Scrapbook paper: Optional, for 1 set of “books” you should need 2 12″ x 12″ sheets. I usually get my at Hobby Lobby for 25 cents a sheet.
- Mod Podge, Cordless Glue Gun, Glue Sticks
- Vinyl Decals: I used my Silhouette Cameo 3 to make mine. My designs are available in the MPD library for my MPD Tribe. For free access click here.
- Oracal 651 Vinyl in red, white and black.
- Clear contact paper to be used as transfer tape for the decals.
- If you don’t have a personal cutter maybe check into stickers, Hobby Lobby has alphabet stickers in the scrapbooking sections.

Painting my mini stacked books
I have enough wood pieces, 4″ x 5″ cut and sanded for 2 set of three Mini Stacked Books.
Starting out, I painted each one.
The first set I wanted to go with a black and white theme, so I painted three sets of “books” all white.
But the second set, I wanted to use Dixie Belle’s Rustic Red,
With this set I had one white, red and a light brown.
Once both sets of mini stacked books are all painted from top and bottom and sides, I grabbed my scrapbook paper.
I used the scrapbook paper with the black and white theme, I had plaid, stripes and polka dots.
Using the Mini Stacked Book to measure, I wanted three sides of my “books” covered.
The top, one side and bottom.
I decoupaged the scrap book paper on with Mod Podge.
If you check out my video below, on one of them I messed up and ended up decoupaging all four sides but in the end, it all worked out!
With crafting it’s easy to make mistakes, just roll with it and see if you can work it to your advantage!
Sometimes it turns out better, happy accidents!

I had some scrap Oracal 651 vinyl on hand in red, black and white.
Since I was unsure, I went ahead and used all three to cut my designs.

ADDING VINYL DECALS TO MY MINI STACKED BOOKS
To transfer my decals onto the “binding” of my mini stacked books, I used clear contact paper.
It’s important to prime your contact paper by removing some of the adhesive either by applying it on a towel or the counter top.
We want the decals to stick on the adhesive but we also want them to be easily removed when we apply them on our project.
Once again during my project I had a goof.
I used the red decals on the “binding” of my black and white books.
But I wasn’t happy with how they looked, so I flipped them over and sanded the other sides that had scrapbook paper on them so they were white again.
I then cut new decals and applied.
If you end up having to do this too, make sure you clean off the dust from sanding good or the decals won’t stick.
Another one of my boo boo’s!
But in the end, black vinyl decals on the white binding looked much better and If I wasn’t running out of time, I would have been more careful on keeping my lettering straight!
Now my other set of Mini Stacked Books turned out just fine!
Once all the decals are applied I used Mod Podge over the lettering as a sealer.
Even though I used matte Mod Podge, they still have a slight sheen which I do not mind!
I then used my new awesome cordless glue gun and glued the stacked books together before adding the embellishments!
Embellishing my mini stacked books!
I kept this part simple.
The Hot Cocoa mini stacked books, I wrapped jute rope around the top end and glued the strings to the bottom.
But the second set I had some buffalo plaid and burlap ribbon I wrapped around and then glued the ribbon on the bottom side.
That was it!
I have my black and white theme tiered tray decorated, for now.
But I keep playing with it and rearranging the knick knacks and my second tiered tray I am still gathering more knickknacks to go with the Hot Cocoa theme so I will share pictures soon!
