Learning how to warp text in Silhouette is easy. It just takes a little playing in the Silhouette program to become comfortable with this feature.
I will show you three different ways to accomplish this in this latest series in #SilhouetteBasics.
Let’s get started!
First things first
Before we begin, let’s open up your Silhouette program and make sure your grid is showing in your design space.
Go to “Open the Page Setup Panel” and at the top of this pop up box hit “Grid Settings” and check the box marked “Show Grid”.
Type any word that you want to practice with then center it in your design space.
Tip: for faster centering go to the right of you program and open “Open up the Transform Panel” and click the “Center” icon. This looks like a bulls-eye, or you can hover your mouse over each icon to see what they are called.
Now that you have your image ready, let’s check out the first way to warp your text or image.
First Option to Warp Text in Silhouette
Before we start, there are two ways to get to the warp tools.
- At the top of of your Silhouette program you can click on the “Panel” and scroll down and click “warp”. This will bring up your pop-up box for your warp controls.
- The second option is to go to the right of your Silhouette program and at the bottom is a small arrow and when you hover over it, it’s labeled “Open the Line Effects Panel”. Go to the wavey grid lines, “Open the Warp Panel” to access the controls this way.
Once your Warp controls are open, highlight your word by clicking on it and then go to your pop-up box and click on “Warp Selected Shapes”. This will bring up the handles you can use to move your text into the shape you want.
Notice in the pop-up box you can also add to the columns and rows of your words for you to get more creative with your manipulations of your word or image.
Tip: If you make a move you are not happy with or feel is a mistake, just go to the top of your Silhouette program to “Edit” and click “Undo Edit” to reverse any previous moves you have made in your design.
Another way to undo any moves you made is to click on the “Restore Original Shapes” in the warp tool pop-up box.
This features will take you back to where you first started, a clean slate.
SECOND OPTION IN warp text in Silhouette
Did you see in the pop up box of the warp tools there are templates?
In the pop up box you’ll see the icon ABC labeled “Warp Templates”, click on this and you will see different shaped templates for you to chose from.
Click on each template to see how these changes your text or image. Pretty neat!
Final option in warp text in Silhouette
An easy way to warp your text or image is to use the “Snap to Grid” feature.
You will find this in the “Page Setup” in the top right controls. In the “Grid Settings” at the top make sure the “Snap to Grid” is checked.
Now you can go to your warp text in Silhouette, and once you have your handles available on your image, move them around.
Do you see the difference?
Those handles in orange, are now moving from point to point.
You can use the red handles to make smooth curves in your image or text.
Have fun playing with this features! There are so many possibilities once you learn this technique.
