I love being challenged but when I was asked to paint two popular cartoon pups, I was VERY nervous!
First, I have no young ones running around anymore and didn’t know who these characters were. When I looked them up, all I could think is…
“How am I going to paint this?”
I can get pretty creative with stencils made from SVG designs and I even make and sell my own (Piper’s Paw Print Designs) but this one pushed my boundaries! And I am thankful now that I tried!
It took me almost 2 weeks of looking at this design and wondering how was I going to do this. I finally noticed in all the pics, the pups were outlined in black, so I started there!
I use clear contact paper to transfer the stencils onto my projects. I do not have the patience to apply stencils to my projects without it. I end up losing inside of letters or I’ll get huge bubbles in my stencils where it should be lying flat! For more information on how I use contact paper for my stencils and transfer tape click here.
I ended up cutting two stencils for each dog. One as an outline to paint the pup in a solid black color. The second one shown below where all the details were pulled out or “weeded” of the stencil.
Where the stencil is laying will now stay black where I want it to. I can now paint the inside of these area the colors I need to paint. I just need to pull out my good, small brushes!
This part was so enjoyable and reminded me of those paint books I used to have as a kid and painted by numbers!
Here is the final project!
Let me know what you think? If you try a project like this yourself and run into any problems just drop me a note and I’ll try to talk you through it!
As I wrap up my projects for July, i’m turning to my requests for August!
I have 2 design to work on and get approved and that leave 2 spots open for next month. Let me know if you’re interested in a personalized handmade sign!
Depending on the size request, I use either solid pine. These can be made with or without a rustic wood frame. Or I use a smooth plywood and these usually do require a rustic frame unless you specifically don’t want one.
I just completed one for an upcoming Halloween themed wedding. I can’t wait to share this sign! I posted a couple of sneak peaks in my Instagram Stories before I sent this spooky sign to his new home!
Make sure you follow me on on Instagram, I love sharing sneak peak pictures of my projects and fur babies and the antics they get up too!
I am currently reading…
The ‘In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin’ by Erick Larson.
I love reading about history and I am only in a few chapters. If you’re a history buff, this one is definitely worth checking out. I’ll give a full update when I am done.
I already have my next audiobook picked out, it’s the new one by Brad Thor, Backlash. I am a big Scott Harvath fan! Like I’ve said before, I have an eclectic taste! From books, styles of painting, to decor! One of the great things about this book series, you do not have to read them in any certain order.
Let me know what you’re currently working on or reading and send your suggestions my way!
Happy reading and have a great week!
