I have never had a year round tree. Between Traceys Fancy with her wonderful Whimsy Tree Class and The Shabby Tree. Finally I have taken the plunge and now I have two small Alpine trees to decorate year round. Here I will show you my idea on how to decorate a Fall tree.
The best part, these trees are not too tall, they are pre-lit, and slender!
Let’s get decorating!
Supplies I used
- 3′ or 4′ Alpine Tree from Hobby Lobby. Click here and here for the ones I am using. These are normally 40% off. Table top trees also would be a great choice for Fall Tree decor. I have seen several at my local Goodwill and second hand stores.
- Assorted picks from Hobby Lobby, Walmart, or Dollar Tree. I’d recommend 8-10 to start with. Click here and here for the ones I used on my tree. This season I used both red and orange berries and pumpkin picks to decorate with.
- Assortment of ribbon for Re-Fabbed bows for the tree topper. Minimum of three wire-edged ribbons. All holiday ribbons at Hobby Lobby are normally 40% off. Dollar Tree also carries a great selection of Fall ribbons.
- 24″ x 24″ Burlap for the tree base and Fall mesh is optional. Left over plastic grocery bags or newspaper to act as a filler.
Let’s get started
If you’re unsure where to start on how to decorate your tree for Fall or feel unsure how to begin, start with one color. Keep it simple and you can even build on this idea next year if you want.
If you see any earth-toned colors for your Fall tree that you love, consider them. Find what colors catches your eye. In the end, it’s what makes you happy.
I’m adding my red and orange berry picks and pumpkins picks. These are the same picks I used in my Large Fall Wreath.
Seasonal picks at Hobby Lobby are normally 40% off and range from $1.49 to $4.99 before the applied discount.
For my 4′ tree, I used 10-11 berry picks to start with and 8 pumpkins picks also.
Since my trees will be either in a corner or up by a wall, I will only decorate the areas that will be showing.
When I decorate my big tree for Christmas, I decorate all sides since our tree is always placed in our bay window.
Depending on your preference and budget, feel free to get more if desired.
Wrap for the base of the tree
For the base of my Fall trees, I wanted to wrap the base in burlap and keep it simple. This will be my year-round or everyday wrap.
I cut approximately 24″ x 24″ from my stash of burlap that I had purchased at Hobby Lobby.
I placed this on the floor and set my stand over this.
To add some bulk to my stand, I then put clean and empty plastic bags over the stand and pulled the burlap up around all the sides.
I then used one of my small ribbons to tie and hold the burlap in place.
Decorate Wrap (over the base wrap)
In the Fall section of Hobby Lobby where the ribbons are located, there is also decoative mesh. I picked a dark brown glittery mesh as a cover over the burlap to dress up the stand for Fall.
The mesh is see through and I decided to cut two strips approximately 24″ inches long for one tree base.
I criss-crossed these pieces and placed the burlap covered tree stump over them.
I pulled the mesh up the same as I did the burlap and tied it with another thin ribbon.
I then trimmed the excess mesh.
This is my decorative tree base.
Since my tree was already put together, I struggled a little lifting these small trees up to place on the burlap and mesh.
If possible, do this before your tree is put together.
It will make it easier on you!
Decorating the Fall tree
I have been completely taken in with picks this year, there are so many versatile ways of using these in decorating and hobbies.
So far the last few months I have used picks to decorate my Fall wreath which you can click here to see.
I also used them in an elegant Re-Fabbed bow I added to a personalized sign for a special friends wedding gift.
To see this display and how to make your own personalized sign and Re-Fabbed bow yourself, click here.
I started with my berry picks and placed them throughout the tree. These picks can be just pushed in or you can even bend them around branches and have them more pronounced and add more flair to your tree.
When the berries are arranged the way I like them, then I add the pumpkins to my tree.
Even though these pumpkins are considerably light weight., I wrapped some of these picks around the branch to get them to stay where I wanted them.
Once again, Re-Fabbed bows to the rescue!
Click on the video below and I will show you how I made these bows a little extra special!
If you want you can use two of your picks as part of the bow, like I did for my friends wedding gift. Or you can make your ribbon extra long and curl them.
You can even add small embellishment to the center of these bows to make them over the top.
If your not sure, try it both ways. If you don’t like it, untie it and start over! Have fun with it!
If you are feeling like you want more creative time working your Fall tree, you can make more Re-Fabbed bows on a smaller scale with your left over ribbons and add them throughout your tree.
Once you tie your tree topper on, you are done! That’s it, enjoy!
For my smaller tree, I decided to decorate it by using left over fabric flowers I had on hand from Dollar Tree and the smaller pumpkin picks.
In addition I made an extra bow for the tree topper and I had this second tree decorated in less than 10 minutes!
