Color Sampling? It is so easy! You just need paint, paper and paint brushes.
When a potential client requests a personalized sign from me and is unsure about the color choices or combinations, providing color samples is the best way to help them make informed choices.

Playing with paints
Even though I tend to use color sampling to help my clients chose their colors, this technique can also be used for picking out colors for personal projects and home decor.
Let’s Get Started on color sampling
When color sampling, I use one brush for each color of paint so I don’t contaminate the different colors.
I use a Mixed Media Pad from Hobby Lobby that accepts a variety of paints from watercolor, chalk to acrylic and start with a fresh sheet.
Before sampling, mix your paint good.
I usually give it a few shakes.
Then I start painting.
As i apply a line of paint, I make sure to write down below the sample the name of the paint.
As you can see in the video below, I provide two examples of color sampling.
There is no right or wrong, I just found a method that works for me.
To begin with, I try not to overwhelm my client with too many colors choices.
I stick with two to three groups of colors and then I will add another group of more colors if needed.
In the second portion of my video I included below, you can see where I grouped two of Dixie Belle’s reds with two of their blues.
Once the paint was dry I provided a picture of the color sampling.
I place this page in natural light only and snap a photo.
We were able to find a combination she liked so we stopped there.
And that is it!
Color sampling is an easy way to play with color combinations to see what you or your potential client may like when planning your projects!
