I needed (want) a Christmas Sign. I have an empty place on my wall for seasonal decor and it’s empty! So I got some of my crafting supplies out and got to work! Plus I’ll show you a new, different technique to “stain” wood!
Supplies I Used
- Unfinished Sign: I got mine from Hobby Lobby
- Christmas Gift bag of your choice. I found mine at Walmart but I could not find it online.
- Dixie Belle’s Black Wax plus clean rag
- Fiskar Self Healing Mat, Rotary blade and acrylic ruler
- Mod Podge and paint brush

Staining my Christmas Sign
Have I got the easiest way to stain wood!
I just discovered this little trick and I love it!
Grab a clean rag, wax color of your choice,
My favorite is Dixie Belle’s Black Wax.
Rub your rag in the wax and then rub it over your wood in the same pattern as the wood grain!
Over time, the wax will harden and cure and seal itself!
I’ll be using this little trick from now on!
No more smelly stains if I can help it and long dry time!
Decoupaging my Christmas Sign
I came across this adorable gift bag at Walmart and grabbed it!
Praying that I had an appropriate sized sign at home that I could pair this with and I was in luck!
I started by taking the bag apart carefully and then using my rotary cutter and acrylic ruler to make sure my cut lines was straight and neat.
Make sure to do a dry fitting before going to the next step.
If you need to trim off the edges a little, now is the time.
Next, for my Christmas Sign I grabbed my Mod Podge and brush.
I painted on a generous amount of Mod Podge on the backside of my gift bag.
Then I placed the gift bag onto the frame and smoothed it out carefully.
I then grabbed a nearby paper towel and began rubbing it over the Christmas sign making sure the entire surface was secure.
Sealing my Christmas Sign
Once the Mod Podge on the Christmas Sign was dry, I then added another two layers of Mod Podge on top of the sign so seal it in.
That is it!
When the sign is dry, she is ready to hang or decorate with!
