My favorite places to look for cabinet doors are my local lumbar store, Falveys or the ReStore (Habitat for Humanity) in Des Moines. Crafting with cabinet doors is easy. They can be turned into signs for new home decor or you can even practice painting new techniques first before tackling a piece of furniture.

- ReDesign with Prima Transfers: Wondrous Floral and Neverending Story.
- Dixie Belle’s Caviar and Drop Cloth, White Wax

Back to Basics
Before we start our cabinet door, make sure you clean it really good with Dixie Belle’s White Lightning.
For more information, click here on a recent blog post I wrote on just how to use it!
Once our cabinet door is thoroughly cleaned, rinsed and dry it’s time to move on to the fun part, painting!
Distressing our Cabinet Door
I knew when I started this project I wanted to distress the edges, this is why I started with Dixie Belles’ Caviar.
I went around mostly the edges of the cabinet door where I would wet-distress later.
Once the Caviar was thoroughly dry, I then switched to Dixie Bells’ Drop Clothe and painted my cabinet door.
Now if you watch my video below, you will notice I use my heat gun to dry the paint.
Normally I do not use this, it was just for the sake of time during my Facebook live.
Once my Drop Cloth is dry, I used a damp lint free cloth and wet-distressed the edges of my cabinet door.
I prefer wet distressing over sanding as I feel it’s less messy and dusty!
Adding a Whimsy flair to my cabinet door
One of my favorite transfers is Never Ending Story from ReDesign with Prima.
I used a portion of this script on just the inside of the cabinet door.
For full instructions on how to apply transfers, click here!
You can also click here to see other project I have completed using transfers.
Once I ensured the transfer was adhered to the surface of my cabinet door, I then pulled out my Midnight Floral transfer and picked which flowers I wanted to add.
I placed the flower transfers in a pretty arrangement on top of the Never-ending Story transfer I had just applied.
Embellishing and Sealing my cabinet door
Once I was happy with my transfers and their arrangements, I moved onto adding some wax embellishment and sealing.
I started with Dixie Belle’s White Wax since I don’t have clear wax.
Before adding any dark glaze or dark waxes, it’s best to provide a layer of sealer or clear or white wax first.
This way you have more control over the dark wax when applying.
Applying dark wax on a surface first, without any prep, will give your project a muddy or dirty appearance.
If you find an area that may not have been protected first and is getting a little “muddy”, go back over this area with clear or white wax and this can act as a sort of an eraser.

Next I decided to add a metal ‘Welcome’ sign from Hobby Lobby to my upcycled cabinet door.
If I had planned this ahead of time, I probably would have spray painted it black.
But I applied this metal decor with hot glue and then decided this addition needed to be a different color.
Later I went back and used a small artist brush and painted over the ‘Welcome’ sign with Dixie Belle’s Caviar.
That’s it!
